Josef Originals was started in 1945 by Muriel Joseph George and her husband, Tom George in 1945 as a jewelry company. Unable to obtain the necessary materials for jewelry making during World War II, Muriel turned to designing figurines. All of the pieces were made in California until 1960. Due to competition from Japanese imports in the 60s, the couple decided to partner with George Good and opened a factory in Japan. Muriel continued to design the figurines until her retirement in 1981.
